    ELIZABETH “BETTY” KOPPER

    Elizabeth “Betty” Kopper, 93 passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. Before moving to the Cottages at Garden Grove, Elizabeth was a resident of Chittenango, NY for over 60 years. Elizabeth was born in St. Johnsville, NY and was a 1944 graduate of St. Johnsville Central School. She then went on to attend the Amsterdam School of Commerce. After graduation, she moved to Schenectady, NY and worked for the General Electric Company as a secretary in the Advertising and Promotions Department. Schenectady is where she met her Union College sweetheart. Richard and Elizabeth wed in September of 1949 and were married for 69 years upon Richard’s passing in 2018. Elizabeth was employed by Agway in DeWitt for 14 years as a secretary in the Transportation Department. Prior to that, she worked for the Chittenango Central School District in the Food Service Department. Elizabeth was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Chittenango, were she was a member of their Altar & Rosary Society. She also served for many years as an election inspector for Madison County. Elizabeth was an advocate for animal welfare, peacefully protesting in Washington, D.C. the slaughter of baby seals, and in the early 1980’s was a volunteer at Driftwood Animal Shelter in Canastota. Elizabeth’s parents were both born in Poland so she was very proud of her Polish heritage and made a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Poland with her sister. Betty enjoyed crafting, birdwatching, gardening and baking. Her apple pie was out-of-this-world delish! She loved America and had quite the collection of patriotic items. Upon retirement, Betty and Dick both enjoyed vacationing every year in Daytona Beach, Florida. Surviving are her son Craig (Becky) Kopper of New Hartford, her daughters, Beverly Kopper (Pete Hill) of Loveland, Colorado and Jill Sheffler (Robert Leo) of Chittenango and her grandchildren, Carleen Kopper, Kristen Kopper, Christopher Roland and Jaime Sheffler and a niece Carol Bollinger. The family would like to thank the staff at Cottage 30 for their kind and compassionate care especially Stephanie, Amber and Mike. A funeral mass and burial will be held in the spring. Contributions in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to Wanderer’s Rest Humane Association, 7138 Sutherland Dr. Canastota, NY 13032.
