    Norman McGowan 89, of Chittenango, NY passed away peacefully  with his loving family by his side. He was born on July 6, 1930 in Ogdensburg, NY, the son of Charles and Lillian McGowan. He went to school in Massena and upon completion entered the Army.  After the Army, in 1952 he married his first wife Theresa Brownell and moved to Syracuse where he had 4 children.  He started a home building business and along with his partner built many houses in the Syracuse area.  Later, for approximately 10 years ,  he was the Superintendent of buildings and grounds for Chittenango Central Schools. Norman went on to become the Village DPW superintendent for approximately 15 years.  In 1974 he married Ellen Hibbard Cain who had 2 children.   Norman retired from the Village in 1986 and along with his wife, daughter and son-in-law formed a partnership and seized the opportunity to open a new hardware store in Chittenango.- McGowan’s Hardware. He enjoyed that career until the age of 86.  He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years, Rotary for 30 years.   Norman was actively involved in the building of the American Legion, Village Clerks office and clerk of the works for the Library expansion and St. Patrick Church’s . He enjoyed building. He was an active and longtime member of  Saint Patrick’s Church and became a Eucharistic minister. On his off time, he had a great love of the Saint Lawrence seaway area . He enjoyed camping and fishing there whenever possible . He had a passion for antique cars and was past president of the Mohican Model A Car Club. He enjoyed many years of car rallies and events. He is survived by his wife Ellen McGowan, daughter Debra Newton, sons John McGowan, Kenneth McGowan ,Matthew McGowan. Step daughters Candace Cain , Terrie Cain, brother -in - law David Hibbard. Daughters-in law Joann McGowan and Charlotte McGowan, Sons-in-law James Newton and Skip Smith. His grandchildren include Brett McGowan, Benjamin McGowan, David McGowan, Devin McGowan, Shane McGowan. Corie Locke, Ashley Northcutt, Jamie Wittrock..
    Great grandchildren, Aiden McGowan, Luke, Jacob and Eli McGowan, Virginia and Josyln McGowan, Jonathan and Julianna Locke. Rylee, Brantley and Charleigh Wittrock. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 am Thursday, August 29, 2019 at St. Patrick’s Church, Chittenango. The Rite of Committal will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango. Everyone is invited to a reception at St. Patrick’s Church Parish Center following the burial.. Calling hours will be 4-7 pm Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango. In lieu of flowers contributions in Norm’s memory may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, Murray Drive, Chittenango, NY 13037.
