OCTOBER 19, 2018

Carlton Joseph Sweeney of Chittenango, NY, died October 19th at a family gathering in Rhode Island. He was born in Oswego, NY, the son of Joseph and Donna Myers Sweeney. Following graduation Class of '48 at Oswego High School, he attended SUNY Oswego, then during the Korean War enlisted in the Air Force and served an adventurous four years as a radio operator with high security clearance in USAFSS. While stationed in Germany he was fortunate to be on the Air Force ski team. Carl met and married his wife of 58 years, Suzanne, in Oswego. They moved to Chittenango as he began his 36 year career as an advertising salesman and manager with the then Herald Journal/Post Standard. He looked back on his good fortune to have used his sales skills when newspaper advertising was challenging and vibrant. Because his mother had him out working at small jobs when he was a boy, he was not one to sit at home in retirement and rearrange the kitchen cabinets. He took jobs at the Business Journal, INFOTO magazine and Tri-State Auto Auction. During their life together he and his wife traveled widely, through the United States and Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and had a spectacular trip on the Great Siberian, traveling from Moscow to Siberia and on to Mongolia and the South Gobi Desert. Carl was an ardent NASCAR and Formula One fan. He took his sons camping at Watkins Glen each Fall for the Gran Prix. The family camped almost every weekend in the summer and skied together in the winter. Carl was a talented carpenter and landscaper and took great pride in maintaining and improving their home. He was also a licensed private pilot. In volunteer and community service Carl took many leadership roles: President of Chittenango Jaycees, ten year member and President of Chittenango Central School Board, President of Stockbridge Valley Flying Club, President of NYState Advertising Executives Association, Executive Secretary of Syracuse GMR of CNY. In retirement he volunteered as a mentor at Cathedral School, working with one boy from failing second grade to a scholarship at CBA in 6th grade. He was also on the Patient Transport Team at Crouse Hospital for many years and a parishioner of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Cazenovia. Carl is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his sons: Dr. Michael Owen Sweeney (Jennifer) of Newton, MA and John Patrick Sweeney (Karen Nicole) of Hope Valley, RI; his sister Diane (George) Von Holtz of Oswego; his grandsons Aidan, Liam and Dylan of Newton, MA; and four nephews. His wish to be part of an anatomical gift program will be realized through that program at Brown University in Providence, RI. His family plans a Memorial Service, Saturday, November 3rd, at 2:00 PM at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 10 Mill Street, Cazenovia.
